Nando's - Hot Chicks Go Green

Its official, Nando’s is going green. In a pilot project driven by a genuine interest in addressing climate change, two major Nando’s outlets have undergone detailed carbon footprints and energy audits. Their Eastgate and East Rand Mall outlets are pioneering the way for the rest of the chain. “Nando’s are determined to become leaders in sustainability,” says Kevin James, CEO of Global Carbon Exchange.

The reports, by Global Carbon Exchange, estimate that energy savings of up to 30% can be achieved if the recommended action is taken.

Should they initiate emission and energy reductions on a national scale, it is clear that Nando’s stands to save significantly. Financially this would equate to savings of millions of Rands annually.

In the current South African climate, taking action like this makes good business sense with electricity tariffs reaching unprecedented highs. If companies do not reduce their consumption they could face imminent Eskom-imposed penalties or possibly be subjected to a carbon tax.

Like Nando’s, an increasing number of organizations are now realizing the benefits of adopting environmental policies. Nando’s are keenly aware of the marketing value of the initiative, as consumer preferences are shifting to brands that conduct their operations with awareness, transparency and ethics.

Nando’s has hinted at some exciting new projects with a distinctly environmental flavour. South Africa will soon see a completely sustainable Nando’s eatery. This will be a benchmark project for both Nando’s and Global Carbon Exchange who share an environmental vision.

"The journey towards energy efficiency and a minimized carbon footprint is a long and arduous one which cannot be traveled alone. To Nando's it was imperative not only that we partner this journey with someone who knows the road, but also who understands our business and our values, and who shares our passion. Several green initiatives and consultancies were considered before deciding to partner with Global Carbon Exchange (GCX).  Our relationship with GCX is dynamic and inspiring, and we believe that with their global expertise and our opportunities, it is a match made in (a greener) heaven!" said Rochelle Schaetzl, Research and Development Director for Nando’s Corporate Services.
